FLAME SPRAY

Flame spraying (combustion powder spray process) applies coatings of metals, alloys, carbides, oxide ceramics and cermets. Using a pressure feed system coating material is carried to the gun nozzle; there it is melted and projected by the gas stream (usually Oxy/Actyl) onto a prepared surface.

This process typically does not yield coatings of comparable adhesive strength as the Plasma or HVOF processes, nor the same level of density, but nevertheless applies a wide range of coating materials that are well suited for application of attrition linings, protection against heat and oxidation or electrical conductivity.

Widely used for high quality abradable linings for use in the compressor section of jet engines & friction reducing bearings also used as bonding coats for high performance ceramics.
